James Bernard Dix, Sr. was born on May 1, 1946, to the late Theadore Dix and Lillie Mae Lofton in Lake City, Florida. He departed life peacefully on July 24, 2025, at the Malcolm Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.

He graduated in 1965 from O'Brien High School (The Bumble Bees) and was drafted into the United States Army later that year. He served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1967 and received an Army commendation medal as a member of the sixth and eighth artillery units and the 1st Infantry (Big Red 1) Division as a Private 1st Class.

After serving in the United States Army, he then decided to further his education at North Florida Junior College and graduated in 1975 as a Law Enforcement Officer, and served with the Live Oak Police Department, and was later promoted to sergeant.  He also served with the Suwannee County Sheriff's Office. He was one of the first black certified officers in Suwannee County. After working in Law Enforcement, he then dedicated 17 years of service to the Suwannee County Road Department, working there from 1991- 2008.

Bernard is survived by his loving son, James Bernard Dix, Jr. (Tallahassee), and daughter/ caregiver of 20 years, Jawanda Michelle Dix (Live Oak). His special companion: Betty Lee Baker, and special children: Gale (The late Jerry) Reliford (Live Oak), Thomas (Brenda) Baker (Live Oak), Transa Baker (Edinburg, Tx.), Terrie Baker (Live Oak). Grandchildren: Mikeya (Carlos) Vega (Naylor, Ga.), Tennille Butler (Valdosta, Ga.), Symphoney (Roderick) Betts (Lake City), Kala Baker, Jada Baker, and Kierria Baker, all of Live Oak. Great Grandchildren: Jalen Walton, Jordan Vega, Samantha Vega, Javin Burton, Kennedi Butler, Kaylie Baker, and Amora Betts.

Special Cousins: Johnny Dix, James Dix, Jr. , Alma Dix, Ruth (Terry) Harrell, all of Lake City, Fl, and Special Friend: Alonzo Philmore (Live Oak).

James Bernard Dix, Sr. will be remembered for his sense of style, his kind heart, caring spirit, sense of humor, and love for his family.
